Preparing for Your Journey
Your psychedelic experience begins long before you enter altered consciousness. Thoughtful preparation shapes the entire arc — fostering safety, depth, and lasting insight.
Why preparation matters
Psychedelics amplify both your internal landscape and external environment. The quality of your preparation directly influences the depth, safety, and meaning of what follows. This isn't just logistical — it's an act of respect for what you're about to do.
Research consistently shows that participants who prepare intentionally — setting clear intentions, preparing their environment, and addressing safety considerations — report more meaningful and well-integrated experiences than those who don't.
The preparation phase isn't the waiting room before the real thing. It's where you set the conditions for everything that follows. Take it as seriously as the journey itself.
Prepare your mind
Clarify your intention
Go beyond a surface-level reason. Ask yourself: Why now? What am I hoping to understand, heal, or release? Am I prepared to receive something unexpected? Write it down. Say it aloud. Let it become real before you begin.
Tip: After journaling your intention, record a short voice memo of it. Hearing yourself speak it aloud before the session can ground you in your purpose in a way writing alone doesn't.
Emotional readiness
Psychedelics magnify what's already present. Approach from a relatively stable headspace — not perfect, but grounded. If you're navigating significant acute distress, consider postponing rather than pushing through.
Mindfulness practices in the days before
- Box breathing (4-4-4-4) to regulate your nervous system and practice a technique you can use during the session
- A 10-minute visualization — close your eyes and imagine moving through the experience with openness
- Daily gratitude — three things you're grateful for, written in the morning
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol, cannabis, and stimulants in the 2-3 days prior
Prepare your space
Your environment becomes part of the experience. Design it with care.
- Choose a calm, private space where you feel safe and can't be interrupted
- Soft lighting — dim lamps, candles, or natural light. Avoid harsh overhead fluorescents.
- Comfortable temperature with blankets nearby — temperature sensitivity shifts during the experience
- Music prepared in advance and downloaded offline — no ads, no buffering
- Water, light snacks, and tissues within reach
- Phone on airplane mode or do not disturb before you begin
Preparation guides — go deeper
Each area of preparation has its own dedicated guide. Work through them in the week before your journey.
Pre-journey checklist
Use this in the 24 hours before your journey begins.
Before you begin
- Intention written down and spoken aloud
- Substance tested — reagent and fentanyl strip
- Space prepared — clean, comfortable, private
- Music downloaded offline and ready
- Trip sitter briefed, or TripCheck scheduled if solo
- Emergency contact knows you'll be unavailable
- Water, snacks, blanket, journal within reach
- Phone on do not disturb or airplane mode
- Medications and interaction check reviewed
- Loose, comfortable clothing on
Safety and harm reduction
Testing your substance is not optional — it's the single preparation step that most directly reduces physical risk. Many substances are mislabeled or contain adulterants. A reagent kit takes a minute and tells you what you're actually working with.
Check medication interactions before your journey, especially if you take SSRIs, MAOIs, lithium, or heart/blood pressure medications. Use The Sanctuary interaction checker for guidance on specific combinations.
